What Is The Difference Between a Fiberglass and Concrete Pool?

Marketing Dept • January 16, 2026

Congratulations, you are thinking of building a pool but aren’t sure which design is best for you. No worries, we specialize in both concrete and fiberglass pools, so choosing between the two doesn’t have to be complicated. Each option has its own advantages depending on your budget, timeline, and design features.

What Is A Fiberglass Pool?

Fiberglass pools are built in a controlled factory environment and delivered as a single-piece shell. Because the surface is smooth and non-porous, they’re easier to clean, resist algae growth, and typically require less chemical treatment over time. Fiberglass is a great fit for homeowners who want a faster installation and a lower-maintenance pool experience.

Fiberglass pools start around $80,000. We also offer different packages that have set pricing. Please contact us for a free personalized quote.

What Is A Concrete Pool?

Concrete pools are built on-site and can be customized to virtually any shape, size, or depth. They’re a great option if you are looking for total design freedom like custom tanning ledges, unique dimensions, or complex layouts. Because concrete is porous, it requires more frequent chemical monitoring and long-term resurfacing, but the design flexibility is unmatched.

Which Type Of Pool Is Right For You?

Consider the following features when determining the best pool for your space:

Installation- Fiberglass installation is much quicker than concrete.

Fiberglass: Fiberglass pools can be installed in as little as 2 to 3 days, once delivered.

Concrete: Concrete pools require a longer build time of about 3 to 6 months.

Customization-  Concrete gives you a lot more flexibility when it comes to design and customization.

Fiberglass: Fiberglass pools offer a degree of design flexibility; however manufacturing and transportation requirements impose specific size limitations. Most fiberglass pools are limited to a maximum of 16 feet in width, 40 feet in length, and approximately 8.5 feet in depth. These restrictions are necessary to accommodate highway transportation of the pre-formed shell.

Concrete: Concrete pools offer total design freedom, allowing you to customize almost every detail of your pool’s appearance.

Chemical Treatment-  Fiberglass uses less chemical treatments.

Fiberglass: Thanks to its non-porous gelcoat surface a fiberglass pool uses significantly fewer chemicals. It often uses up to 30% less chlorine while maintaining stable pH levels and naturally resisting algae growth.

Concrete: Because concrete is porous and alkaline, it requires more frequent chemical monitoring. Owners should expect higher chemical usage and regular acid additions in order to maintain proper water balance and prevent algae.

Maintenance-  Fiberglass requires less maintenance.

Fiberglass: Fiberglass pools are easy to maintain with gentle, non-abrasive cleaning products designed specifically for this type of pool. Water levels should always remain above the skimmer in order to counter groundwater pressure, and if draining is ever necessary professional supervision is recommended in order to avoid structural damage.

Concrete: Concrete pools require daily skimming and debris removal, weekly brushing of the walls and floor, monthly inspections for cracking, and a possibility of full resurfacing approximately every 10 to 15 years.

Repair Opportunity-  Fiberglass has less needs for repairs.

Fiberglass: Fiberglass pools typically require less repairs with the most common one being gel coat maintenance. Spider cracks can show up in the gel coating as time goes by but it rarely causes structural problems.

Concrete: Depending on weather conditions concrete pools require scheduled resurfacing every 10 to 15 years due to their porous surface.

Energy Efficiency-  Fiberglass uses less energy.

Fiberglass: Fiberglass is naturally an excellent insulator. Its non-porous surface minimizes heat loss, allowing the water to retain warmth more efficiently which lowers overall energy demands.

Concrete: Concrete pools tend to lose heat faster due to their porous surface, which means they typically require more energy to stay warm.

Q&A

  • Do I have enough space in my backyard for a pool?

Most properties can accommodate a pool, even smaller or uniquely shaped yards. During the design process we evaluate available space, setbacks, utilities, and access to determine the best layout for your property.

  • Are there zoning rules or permits required?

Yes, building a pool typically requires local permits and inspections. We handle the permitting process and ensure the pool meets all zoning, safety, and building requirements.

  • Will underground utilities affect where the pool can go?

Yes, underground utilities such as gas, electric, water, and sewer lines can influence pool placement. Before construction utility locations are identified to ensure the pool is safely positioned and complies with local regulations.

  • Can a pool be built on a sloped yard?

Yes, sloped yards often allow for creative design opportunities such as retaining walls, elevated pools, or multi-level outdoor spaces.

  • How close can a pool be to my house or property line?

During the planning phase we design the pool layout to meet local codes while maximizing usable space.

  • Can a pool match my home's style and landscaping?

Absolutely! A well designed pool should feel like a natural extension of your home and landscaping. During the design process we will discuss the ideal pool silhoutte for your space along with hardscapes, landscaping, plants, and any other matrials needed to bring the space all together.

  • Do pools increase home value?

A professionally designed pool can increase a home’s appeal and perceived value. While resale impact varies, many buyers view a pool as a premium lifestyle feature rather than just an amenity.

  • Are financing options available?

    Yes, financing options are available.

  • Can I maintain a pool myself or should I hire a service?

Yes, many homeowners choose to handle basic maintenance such as cleaning and water testing themsleves. Modern pool systems help make maintenance more manageable, though professional service is always an option for added convenience.

  • Do I need a fence or safety cover?

Most local codes require a safety barrier such as a fence with a self-closing gate. Safety covers are also a popular option and can provide both protection and peace of mind, especially for families with children or pets.

  • Can I add automatic pool covers?

Yes, automatic pool covers can be integrated into many pool designs. They improve safety, reduce heat loss, limit debris, and help conserve water and chemicals.

  • How often will the weather allow for me to use a pool in Chicago?

In the Chicago area, pools are typically used from late Spring through early Fall. However with a pool heater and cover many homeowners are able to extend their swimming season by several weeks and hot tubs can be used year round.

  • What type of heating systems are available?

Common pool heating options include gas heaters, electric heat pumps, and hybrid systems. The right choice depends on pool size, desired water temperature, energy efficiency goals, and how often the pool will be used.
